Love them or hate them, the Kardashians are impossible to ignore. They practically control every social media network, dominate the covers of gossip rag and respected magazines, and have extended their influence into the retail industry. With a different story popping up about at least one of the family members on a daily basis, it seems that the Kardashians have become the "royal family" of the United States. Kim Kardashian's shoot for Paper Magazine was released online this week, and the now-iconic photo of Kim sending an arc of champagne above her head into a glass resting on her rear was accompanied by a simple slogan: "Break the Internet Kim Kardashian."
Kylie, Kendall, Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe are all within the top 15 for Most Followers on Instagram. Kim has more than 25 million twitter followers, and their TV show, "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," receives between 2 million and 3 million views per episode. It's pretty clear that the Kardashian-Jenner clan has a good handle on social media, and they have become such a fascinating spectacle in American pop culture, and they have pioneered a lifestyle that satisfies the curiosity of their fans. "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" gave viewers a behind-the-scences look at life as a celebrity, and it created a new fascination with wealth, excess, and fame. This show was just a platform, which the Kardashians skillfully utilized to build their social media empire. Now, they provide their millions of followers with a constant stream of messages and photos, almost to the point where they really have no privacy. They are using the internet to it's absolute fullest capacity, and they are paving the way for other celebrities to do the same.
This image caused a media frenzy, which is nothing unusual for the Kardashians, who seem to find their way into top headlines on a daily basis. But this article was different than a typical Kardashian news story, because this article caused viewers to question, "What does it mean to break the internet? And can Kim Kardashian really accomplish such a feat?"
First, let's clarify that the internet isn't actually broken. This saying is a metaphor for having such a massive presence online that you practically destroy all other purposes of the internet. When Kim's shoot was released earlier this week, it was on every news site, celebrity blog, Facebook wall, Twitter timeline, and Instagram feed. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few days, you have definitely seen this picture before. So Paper Magazine claims that Kim Kardashian is, in effect, breaking the internet. But, I disagree. Paper Magazine is, as its name suggests, a paper magazine. So the fact that Kim Kardashian made such an impact on the internet by being on the cover of a print magazine just shows how the Kardashians have not broken the internet, but rather played a major role in its growth.
Whether you love them or hate them, you can't deny the prominence that the Kardashians have in American culture. So no, Paper Magazine didn't literally mean that Kim and her family are destroying the internet, but it's safe to say that without them, the internet would not be what it is today.
I know it's been a while since my last post, but there is a good reason for the delay. I've been moving in to COLLEGE!!!! That's right; I'm finally a student at Cornell University. I'm studying in the most amazing program: Fiber Science & Apparel Design. My concentration is in Management, and to give you an idea of what my semester is going to be like, these are my courses for my major:
FSAD 1250: Art, Design, & Visual Thinking
FSAD 1350: Fibers, Fabrics, & Finishes
FSAD 1360: Fibers and Yarn Analysis
FSAD 2310: Fashion Product Management
Pretty insane, right? I'm actually so excited for classes to start because I can't wait to study something I'm so passionate about!!!!
I've been working hard on decorating my dorm and making it absolutely perfect! For me, my dorm is more than a place to sleep and study. It's my home for the year, and for the first time, I have control over how my home is decorated! I took this process very seriously, and I'm so proud of the finished product:
The picture does not do my dorm justice at all. The lighting in here is absolutely TERRIBLE. But, I love my decor! I went with a navy and white color scheme and chose lavender and robin's egg as my accent colors. My bed set is from American Made Dorm & Home, and the amazing people at AMDorm gave me this beautiful headboard, which adds the perfect touch of style to my bed! As for my decorations, I incorporated a lot of different concepts that inspire me. From pictures of Audrey Hepburn to quotes from Iggy Azalea, my dorm has everything!
At first, I was really upset when I found out my walls were made of brick, but now I am so happy! I think they add a cool vibe that really contrasts the elegance of the rest of my dorm. It's like taking the decorations from Blair Waldorf's bedroom and putting them in Dan & Jenny Humphrey's Brooklyn apartment.
Decorating my dorm was quite a daunting task, but I am in love with how it looks now. Each piece means something special to me, whether it is a ballerina statue from my first dance recital, a mug from my best friend, or a quote that inspires me to succeed. I spent hours on AllPosters.com picking out the best artwork, and I spent days at Michael's picking out frames and flowers! It's so important to have a sanctuary to come back to after a stressful day of classes, and I couldn't be more excited about my dorm!!
It seems like just yesterday I was staring at a blank Word document, scouring my brain for one-of-a-kind Common App essay ideas that would get me into the colleges I had always dreamt about. 23 drafts, 10 applications, 7 college visits, and 1 decision later, the time has come to say goodbye to the life I have always known and move on to college. Exactly one week from today is my official move-in day, and I could not be more excited. Finally, I'll be taking classes I chose, studying topics I am passionate about, and making a new, independent life for myself. But, I can't help but be a little nervous. How will I know who I should be friends with? What if my classes are more difficult than I expect? How will I deal with the transition from life at home to life on my own?
I know 99.9% of incoming freshman are experiencing the same feelings. It's certainly scary leaving the life you've always known. I've been away from home every summer for the past 8 years, so I'm used to that lifestyle. But something about going to college just seems more permanent. It's like the transition from childhood into adulthood, and it happens really quickly! I can't help but feel sad knowing that tomorrow night will be the last time for a while that I'll be able to eat Shrimp Pad Thai at my favorite restaurant, Blossom. Or that tonight will be my last closing shift at my job. Saying goodbye to the people and places I've become so familiar with has not been easy. But I know that an amazing experience filled with incredible opportunities lies ahead of me.
Every time I tell someone I'm about to begin my four years at college, I get the same advice: "Enjoy every minute of it,. These are going to be the best for years of your life, and they are going to fly by."
So, I'm taking this advice very seriously. To my readers entering their senior year of high school, have a great year and enjoy it, because you don't realize how different life is going to be after high school. To my fellow pre-freshman, don't wish time away, don't miss out on an amazing opportunity, and try not to gain the freshman 15. And to everyone else, have an amazing school year!
This post has absolutely nothing to do with fashion or style, but I felt it was necessary to express my feelings as I transition to the next chapter of my life. I'm hoping to make some amazing friendships and memories in the next four years, expand my website, learn A LOT, and try new things! And now, I'll conclude with a profound and thoughtful quote from everyone's favorite Cornelian, Andy Bernard, who once said:
" I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
Every summer since 5th grade, I've traveled away from home over the summer, and I've basically had every single day planned out by the hour. So this year, things are a little different. I got a few requests (7 to be exact!) on what my life is like this summer, so here it is. The play-by-play on an average summer day when I have work!
10:00 AM: I wake up.
10:01 AM: I decide it's too early to be awake and struggle to fall back asleep.
10:15 AM: After I realize I'm too awake to fall asleep, I sit on my phone, checking Instagram, Twitter, Lookbook, and I read some blogs
10:45 AM: Finally, I decide it's time to get out of bed and get my day started!
11:00 AM: I love to start my day with a delicious breakfast, which usually consists of a lot of fruit and the occasional bagel.
11:05 AM: I read CNN.com to make sure I didn't miss any major news, then I get ready for the day.
11:30 AM: I shower, do my hair, and get dressed, even though I know I'll be changing into work clothes in a few hours.
12:30 PM: I try to fit a blog post in before work while I'm eating lunch. Then, I get in my car and head over to the mall.
1:45 PM: I get to the mall and stop at Starbucks for my daily Grande Black Iced Tea Lemonade. I'm only 14 Stars away from getting a gold card, so I go out of my way to get to Starbucks.
2:00 PM: This is the time my shift usually begins. For the next 8 hours, I help customers, sell bags and shoes, tidy up the store, run for shoes, etc. I really love my job because I love the people I work with, and I love the retail industry! I'm so lucky to already have an amazing job and my career is only just beginning!!
10:30 PM: After a LONG day on my feet, I am way too tired to do anything besides go home, and have a small serving of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food while watching an episode of Modern Family.
12:30 AM: After a few hours spent searching the web for the next day's outfit inspiration, I go to sleep!
And that's a typical day in the life of a working girl! But don't worry, I get days off so it's not all work and no play for me this summer! But, keep on sending requests of what you'd like to see on my blog to firstname.lastname@example.org! I love to hear your ideas and feedback! XOXO
Can you believe the school year is almost over? I’m so excited to graduate high school and move on to Cornell University next year! But first, I need to buy A TON of graduation presents! Everyone is throwing graduation parties, and picking out gifts can be super overwhelming. Here is a cheat sheet of the best gifts for the best prices!
Perfectly Practical Presents:
Nothing says congratulations like a new Keurig, am I right? There are some things that college students just need, and they’d rather receive them as gifts than pay out of their own pocket! Here are some of my favorite practical presents
I love this personalized drawstring laundry bag ($42.00). One of the hardest parts of college will be learning to do laundry, but it won’t be so bad with an adorable bag like this one! You can customize this bag with tons of different fonts and colors, and you can even get it monogrammed!
I wasn’t’ joking about the Keurig. This is seriously something every soon-to-be college student wants. This particular Keurig is perfect because it’s small and inexpensive ($99.00). Throw in a few of your favorite K-Cups from Dunkin, and you’ve made the perfect gift!
Every college student needs a USB drive for transferring essays and assignments. Why use a boring USB when you could have a fabulous one? I’m already obsessed with Furla’s Candy Bag, but this Candy USB Stick took my obsession to a whole new level. For $68, you can buy your grad the most fashionable tech accessory there is!
Get your grad a gorgeous gift (woah so much alliteration) to wear in college! She’ll think of you every time she puts it on!
I love this Tory Burch Flower Double Wrap Bracelet ($125.00). It comes in pink, navy, and white (all great choices, but obviously pink is my favorite!). This bracelet is simple, casual, and thoughtful. Your grad will absolutely love it!
Another great gifts is a fun wallet! This Kate Spade Cobble Hill Lacey Wallet ($198.00) is perfect! It comes in hot pink, light blue, black, and a deep maroon-ish red. It's large, so it has lots of room for cash and credit cards, and it's so stylish!
Finally, a simple initial necklace is a great, personal gift! I like this SHY by Sydney Evan Initial Pendant Necklace with Diamond ($125.00). This is different than other initial necklaces because it has an adorable diamond detail! It is very simple and reasonably priced; and it makes a beautiful gift!
Graduation is such an exciting time! I've had a great four years at high school, and there are definitely things I am going to miss, but I'm so ready to move on to bigger and better things! I can't wait to share all my experiences with you, and I thank you for following me on my journey!
One thing I am really going to miss about high school is being a member of the Wayne Hills Theatre Workshop. For the past three years, I have been in three musical productions through my high school: Beauty and the Beast, Curtains, and Godspell. A week ago today was opening night of Godspell, and it was absolutely the most amazing show I could ever hope to be a part of! What a great way to end my senior year! This show is a little untraditional, and the characters don't actually have names, but basically it's a story about Jesus, the apostles that followed his teachings, and how Judas betrayed him. The twist is that it is set in a consignment shop in current time! I know, it sounds SUPER weird, but you have to see it to understand it. I had such an amazing time being an apostle, and it was such a fun role because instead of creating a character, I really got to be myself! I sang the song "Day By Day," and here is a clip of me singing from our Friday night performance:
Another one of my favorite numbers was "All for the Best," and I loved this one because it was a tap number!
And finally, I really loved singing "By My Side." The harmonies in this song are SO BEAUTIFUL, and I got to sing it with my friends Paula, Izzy, and Amanda, which was so much fun!
My favorite part about being in the theatre program was making so many amazing friends! I have made so many amazing memories with absolutely amazing people, and I am really going to miss my time with the Wayne Hills Theatre Workshop! So, thank you to everyone who helped make my time with the WHTW so much fun, thank you to my cast and crew, my INCREDIBLY TALENTED directors, my parents, and everyone who came to see the show! (oh and also a quick shout out to my friend, Jayna Puchkoff, for these awesome pictures!)
Of course, I can't conclude this post without talking about my costume!! I worked SO HARD to put this costume together, and I am so happy with how it came out! I am wearing a light wash denim jacket from Nordstrom, and I actually made my top with the help of my friend, Sam. It was originally a white crop top from Brandy Melville, but we used a tye dye kit to color it pink and green! I am also wearing a white tulle skirt from a costume store, a pink statement necklace from Nordstrom, and a jeweled bracelet from Forever 21. My silver sneakers are Keds, and my tap shoes are Capezio. My mother actually made my flower belt. Part of the story of Godspell is that each apostle gets a gift from Jesus. In some productions, they all wear red roses or certain makeup. In our production, each apostle got a different gift, but they were all the same color: teal! So, my mom and I purchased ribbon from a fabric store and made this GORGEOUS teal belt! I am so in love with this costume. I am going to miss being in the musical so much, and I am so thankful I had this amazing experience for the past three years!
Hello world! It's been quite some time since I last posted, but finally I have some down time right now! I've been so busy this month because I'm in my school's production of Godspell, and it opens exactly one week from yesterday! So, what have I been up to lately? Well...
I finally bought an Alex and Ani ring! This Sacred Studs Ring ($28) comes in both a gold and silver base and many different color options for the stone. Each color is indicative of a different quality, and I chose yellow because it represents intellect! I love this ring because it's basically a mini Alex and Ani bracelet! The only downside is that it's one size fits all, so since I have thin fingers, it's a little large on me. But, it's a gorgeous ring and I'm so obsessed with it.
I got this amazing chocolate shoe for my birthday from my friend, Sabrina! Unfortunately, it was a size 6 and I'm a size 8 1/2, so I couldn't keep it for prom, but it sure was delicious!
My nail game is finally back on! After taking a two month break from manicures, I went back to gels last weekend. In this picture, I am wearing the CND Shellac color Lilac Longing! There is speculation that gel manicures can increase the risk of skin cancer, so I wore Anti UV Fingerless Gloves and applied sunscreen before my manicure! I've also been working on revitalizing the skin around my nails because my cuticles have gotten out of hand during this cold winter! I'm in love with this Sally Hansen Cuticle Massage Cream with Apricot Oil. It smells great and it makes my fingers feel so soft. I've definitely seen an improvement in my cuticle region since I started using it two weeks ago.
I finally got around to buying a black bag! I'm obsessed with this bag because it's just big enough to fit everything I carry around, it has a very structured look, and it's not too heavy!
Basically every day for the past three months I've been rehearsing for Godspell. I can't believe it's almost showtime! Pictured above is me with two of my best friends Shayna (left) and Sabrina (middle) in our costumes! The vibe of the show is very bohemian, so we got to make really funky costumes this year. Don't worry, more pictures of my costume will be posted next week after the show is over!
Finally, today was the Junior Formal at my high school, so I got to see all my gorgeous friends in their lovely dresses! In the first picture is me and my friend Victoria, who my brother went to Formal with! She looked so stunning in her navy dress, and I'm obsessed with her hair and makeup! In the second picture is me and my friend Ellie, who works at Nordstrom with me! She is wearing a gorgeous Badgley Mischka dress (one of my favorite designers!). Everyone looked so pretty this evening, and it brought back so many memories of my Formal...
It feels like winter is never going to end, but summer is actually a lot closer than you think. Now is the time to start working on your bikini body so you can be confident all summer long. Getting motivated to get on the treadmill is definitely difficult, but it's a little easier if you dress for the part because when you look good, you feel good! Buying active wear can be overwhelming since there are so many different brands, stores, and styles, so I took some style tips from one of my best friends, Caity Wallace (instagram: @caity_wallace). Caity is a Varsity Cross Country runner and runs the mile and two mile events in Track. She's constantly working out, and she does it in great style! Here are some style tips based on her active outfits!
1) Start with a good base:
Spandex and sports bras are the first ingredients to a perfect workout look, so make sure you're buying the best products for your body! When it comes to spandex, I love these Nike Pro 3" Shorts ($27.99). They are simple, come in tons of colors, and very light. Most importantly, they are SUPER COMFORTABLE!
Every great pair of compression shorts needs a matching sports bra! You can't go wrong with this Nike Pro Core Bra($29.99). This sports bra also comes in many colors to match your spandex sports! It's comfortable, supportive, and perfect for your workout!
Looking for a similar look with a little less intensity? This Zella Breathe Seep Seamless Bra ($28.00) is the cutest light-weight sports bra! It comes in fun bright colors, and it is more like a bralette than a sports bra, so it's perfect for activities like yoga and pilates. Pair this bra with these Zella Haute Shorts ($42.00) for a stylish and comfortable look!
Now let's talk about the next layer: shirts and pants. When Caity works out, she likes to wear v-necks! My favorite workout v-neck is this Nike Legend V-Neck Tee ($25.00). It comes in three super-bright colors (bright pink, light pink, and neon green). This is a great tee that will allow you to stay cool and comfy throughout your workout! Finish this look off with some cool performance leggings, like these Zella Perfect Run Tights ($58.00).
Leggings are great for working out, but sometimes you just need a good pair of yoga pants. These Hard Tail Bootcut Knit Foldover Pants ($80.00) are great! I love the pattern on the fold over, and Hard Tail pants are known for being super comfortable!
I like to work out inside, so usually a sports bra and leggings is enough for me! But, if you're an outdoor runner like Caity, then sometimes you need that extra layer to stay warm! This Under Armour Cozy Neck ColdGear Top(originally $49.99, on sale $37.49) is a great option! It's a great pink color, and it's the perfect material to be comfortable while working out.
If you're looking for a jacket, then this Zella Platinum Half Zip Top ($98.00) is another option to help you keep warm!
I love jackets like this because they are so stylish! This jacket comes in two great colors, and it has a very unique design! Be the best dressed girl at the gym in this great jacket.
Now, let's talk about the most important part of your outfit: shoes! I have tried a lot of different running sneakers, but nothing beats the Nike Free 3.0 v5 Running Shoe ($110.00). These sneakers are absolutely the best! They are so light, and it literally feels like walking on air when you wear them! Plus they come in so many different colors! Right now, I have these sneakers in the pink and white color. I love these sneakers os much, I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a new running shoe.
Working out is easier when you look great! Pick up some of these trendy pieces, get to the gym, and get ready to look great this summer!
Ella Yelich-O'Connor was a normal girl living in New Zealand with dreams of becoming a singer. In 2012, just weeks after her 16th birthday, she released an original song called "Royals" under the name Lorde. Two years later, Lorde has become one of the most talked about artists in pop music, and just last week she won two Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Her latest album, Pure Heroine, has topped the charts for weeks, so I thought I would give it a listen. And, I LOVE IT!
This album consists of 10 songs all written by Lorde. Each track is so different from the song before it, which keeps things interesting. What I love about this album is that she actually writes her own music, and you can hear in her voice how much the lyrics mean to her. Few current pop singers still write their music, and this really makes Lorde stand out.
My favorite song from this album is the first track, Tennis Court. It has a great beat, and the lyrics are so awesome. Lorde basically talks about how she won't let popularity and material things control her. Fame isn't as great as it seems, and Lorde knows this for sure. Her music is relatable because she's a young artist (17 years old) and she sings how she feels! If you haven't already checked this album out, I would definitely recommend it because I love every single song on it! I can't wait to hear more music from Lorde!
Check out Tennis Court, by Lorde:
